The VanLandingham Estate, a Charlotte icon built in 1914, has undergone significant changes over its 110-year history. While the original grounds used to extend much further than its current 2.8 acre footprint in Plaza Midwood, portions of land have been sold off over time. Cluck’s goal was a renovation and addition that ensured the estate’s future economic sustainability. This latest transformation helped solidify the historic house’s status as a destination for weddings and events with a covered patio with a semi-permanent tent structure, catering-friendly kitchen, updated finishes, and enhanced Bride/Groom suites.
Previously hindered by unsuccessful rezoning attempts and neglect, the Estate is now rezoned as part of a comprehensive master plan that encompasses gardens, the Main House, and an Orangerie. This plan also includes new parking, enhanced landscaping, and a connection to a proposed “Topiary” office building on-site.
In addition to the Main House restorations, the new Topiary Building will add to the historic landscaping and improve the existing courtyard. This two-story office and retail building has been designed to fit into the iconic grounds. The Topiary is sited along an existing stone wall that faces the house; it is recessed into the landscape by a half level to minimize its impact while highlighting the Historic House. The sleekness of the structure is complemented by a living wall of vines, curated by a local arborist with connections to the history of Charlotte-specific flora.
