This modern residence features a blend of cypress and mill-finished steel, with large sliding doors seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor spaces. Efforts were made to preserve the natural surroundings, with the six-car garage, known as The Moto Dojo, cleverly concealed with a green roof and rooftop deck. Solar panels power the house and electric cars.
Throughout the design process, design ingenuity was paramount due to the property’s unique characteristics, including its narrow and elongated shape (68’W x 1,000’L) and 40’ elevation change. The garage was excavated to merge with the landscape, creating a flowing backyard onto the roof. Overscaled windows and doors served as a kind of optical illusion to reduce the perceived scale of the home to match the massing of other homes in the neighborhood, while a sunken courtyard harmonized with the topography. Inside, minimal interior columns maximize space.
